• good = gut goot

• bad = schlecht shlekht

• yes = ja yah

• no = nein nine (as in the number)

• please = bitte bit-uh

• thank you (very much) = danke (schön) dang-keh (shurn)

• what is your name? = wie heißt du? vee - hyst - doo

• my name is... = ich heiße... ikh - hy-suh

• where are you from? = woher kommst du? vo-hehr - komst - doo

• I am from... = ich komme aus... ikh - kom-uh - owz

• do you know / speak / understand? = weißt / sprichst /      verstehst du? vyst / shprikhst  / vehr-shtayst - doo

- Notes -

* With these phrases, you should be able to greet people, and ask and answer a few simple questions.

* Like in English, German sentence structure is 'subject-verb-object' (e.g. 'I eat the apple' = 'Ich esse den Apfel').

* The 'kh' in the pronunciation guide is like the 'ch' in the Scottish 'loch'. It is often pronounced more like a hissing 'sh' sound.
